Evaluating the Possibility of Translating Technological Advances in Non-Invasive Continuous Lactate Monitoring into Critical Care

Lactate is widely measured in critically ill patients as a robust indicator of patient deterioration and response to treatment. Plasma concentrations represent balance between lactate production clearance. Analysis has typically been performed with the aim detecting tissue hypoxia. However, there diverse range processes unrelated increased anaerobic metabolism that result accumulation lactate, complicating clinical interpretation. Further, levels can change rapidly over short spaces time, even subtle changes reflect profound patient’s condition. Hence, significant need for frequent monitoring critical care. commonplace sports performance monitoring, given elevation during exercise. The desire continuously monitor athletes led development various technological approaches non-invasive, continuous measurements. This review aims firstly on potential benefits non-invasive technology within care setting.
